About Us

For over 40 years, Sheehan & Partners LLP has been involved in many of the most serious and complex criminal defence cases in Ireland in all Courts, including the Circuit Court, Central Criminal Court, Special Criminal Court, Court of Criminal Appeal, High Court, and Supreme Court.

The firm places a strong emphasis on advocacy in the District Court, where its solicitor-advocates have gained a reputation for quality of presentation and integrity, appearing daily in District Courts in Dublin and throughout the State.

Sheehan & Partners LLP has dealt with many of the leading cases in Extradition Law, Constitutional aspects of Criminal Law, Judicial Review cases arising from criminal defence work, Human Rights cases, as well as leading cases in the field of Mental Health Law, both civil and criminal. The firm has a consistent level of involvement in the ground-breaking cases in the field of criminal defence litigation, and has twice successfully challenged the Irish Government before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The firm has acted in one of only three cases thus far where the Irish Courts have granted a Declaration of Incompatibility with the European Convention.

More recently, the practice has been asked to advise and represent persons in a substantial number of cases involving allegations of sexual offending, dealing with both civil and criminal dimensions. With the spread of Internet-based offending, the firm regularly advises persons suspected or accused of Internet crime of all kinds.

As the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), Revenue and other Regulatory authorities have expanded their investigative and prosecutorial work, Sheehan & Partners LLP have frequently been retained to advise persons and firms who have come to the attention of those agencies. The firm has regularly been requested to advise in the field of seizure of assets and money-laundering, and has consistently appeared in the High Court on behalf of persons sued by the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB).

The practice’s offices are situated in Dublin city centre, just a short distance from the Four Courts. However the partners are prepared to, and frequently do, appear in Courts all over Ireland, and are prepared to accept instructions from anywhere within the jurisdiction. They are also regularly involved in dealing with cases outside the Republic of Ireland with an Irish criminal law dimension, and will, if requested to do so, travel abroad to advise.
